How to Ease Your Dog's Firework Anxiety

The new year is approaching... hello 2022! While this is such an exciting time of year, there’s one thing that could be disturbing your pup- those noisy fireworks! Some poor fur babies are scared out of their socks when the ball drops and the fireworks go off. If your pup is known to be frightened easily, follow some of these tips on how to calm them down during the new year.

1. Try to exercise your pup a lot the day of NYE

Unlike thunderstorms which also cause distress to dogs, you’ll know when the fireworks are coming on NYE. Providing your pup with a lot of exercise before this happens will ensure that they have less pent up nervous energy when the fireworks go off. The more tired they are, the higher chance of them chilling out!

2. Provide them with a safe space and other noises

Make sure you’re providing your dog with a ‘safe space’ during fireworks. This could be a closed off room with some of their favorite toys, or an open crate (only if they enjoy crates). A great way to tune out the sound of fireworks is to provide a white sound/noise machine to block out the noise. More simply, the sound of the TV can also be effective! Maybe turn on some Dogtv. (A whole cable network with calming footage of dogs, made for dogs!)

Hot tip: close all the curtains and blinds while fireworks go off. Dog’s can be very sensitive to light and sudden changes.

3. Stay calm and spoil!

If there’s ever a time to spoil your pup, it’s now! Grab all of their favorite toys, treats, Tukka Mate, whatever makes them happy. Engage excitedly and consistently with your dog during this time, with extra pets and love. And while it may be stressful for you to see your dog upset, the best thing you can do is remain calm which shows them that everything is alright!

4. Consider giving your pup some CBD

CBD is short for cannabidiol, one of the chemical compounds that’s derived from the hemp plants. CBD acts on the endocannabinoid system of both humans and pets! What is the endocannabinoid system you ask? It’s a unique communication system in the brain and body that affects how your pet feels, moves, and reacts! You can see where this is headed right?

Yep! When extracted and used in products such as oils or chews, CBD can pose a wide range of benefits which include calming and relaxing your dog! And before you ask, no, CBD does not get your dog high! CBD is the non-intoxicating component of hemp and marijuana plants. However, if dosed properly, CBD does influence brain activity in pets, which leads to benefits such as reduction in stress and anxiety- ideal for the loud fireworks.

Remember to talk this through with a Vet or animal professional beforehand!

5. Create a full proof no escape zone

During this time, it’s pretty imperative that all doors and windows are shut tight! If possible, make sure to see that your pup has no access to doors that lead outside. If it’s time for them to use the restroom, accompany them outside or place a pee pad down for them! Make sure their collar is on and that everyone in your home is aware to be quick when opening doors!

We hope that these tips are useful to you and your pup! Fireworks are beautiful and festive but can be very scary for your fur baby. Following these tips will help ensure their comfort and safety!

Have a beautiful new years everybody! Let’s ring in 2022 with love, happiness, and safety!

Xoxo, TukkaMate
